Seminar 2019 is almost upon us!  We look forward to welcoming you to campus in just a few weeks!

Important:   If you haven’t already done so, please be sure to complete the google survey  you received.   The critical information you supply  will allow us to complete  masterclass assignments, repertoire lists, scholarship roommate assignments, etc.

WELCOME

 The guidelines for choosing repertoire are as follows:

  • Pre-formed ensembles will choose your own repertoire. Two contrasting works encouraged.

  • For new groups, we  recommend narrowing the choice to one work with a possible second contrasting work.  Please submit your choice for approval.

  • Each ensemble will play one movement in the Finale Concert at Campbell Recital Hall on Sunday, June 30th (11am to 3pm).

  • Most participants fly into San Francisco International Airport (SFO). San Jose International Airport (SJC) is also a fine option. We  do not advise Oakland (OAK) because of complications of getting to campus from Oakland.

  • Students are expected to arrive on campus Friday evening (June 21) between 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm. Registration will be held Saturday, June 22 from 9 am to 12:30 am. A sign up sheet will be posted HERE shortly. The Welcome Meeting will be at 1:00 pm.

Transport Options

  • Download and set up a LYFT account before you arrive.

  • Some ensembles take advantage of the Super Shuttle. Feedback tells us this is  more successful with Inbound to campus than Outbound to airport.

  • With advance planning you can navigate public transportation for less cost. From SFO take BART one stop to MILLBRAE STATION, switch to CALTRAIN towards San Jose. Get off at PALO ALTO STATION. You will be on the correct side of the train tracks. Take free Marguerite Shuttle X or Y to Tresidder Student Union stop (WEEKDAYS ONLY). This trip will probably take two hours.

  • If you're feeling swanky, set up a ride with Palo Alto Limo. SUV averages $85 plus tip. Let them know you have multiple people with instruments and luggage.

HOUSING

  • All scholarship housing is shared occupancy (doubles, triples or quads) in an undergraduate dorm. Individual rooms are not available. You may choose to room with your ensemble members or to be assigned a roommate(s). A survey will posted asking for your roommate preferences (M-F is fine upon request; if assigned roommates will be F-F or M-M.)

Check-in Friday, June 21, 5:00 pm and 9:00 pm 

  • On-campus housing is available at 5:00 pm at the earliest. Student participants are expected to arrive on campus on Friday. LATE CHECK-IN MUST BE ARRANGED AHEAD OF TIME. 

  • Should you arrive on campus before 5:00 pm on Friday, you are welcome to make your way to Braun Music Center (541 Lasuen Mall)  where you can hang out in the lounge (2nd floor, room 205), or go to the nearby student union and get a coffee. 

 Check-out Sunday, June 30, 8:00 am to 10:00 am

  • Late check-out is NOT POSSIBLE.

  • Note: you can take your luggage to Braun Music Center for the day.

There is no smoking in campus housing. Stanford is a tobacco-free campus.

Community Members

Participants may request on-campus housing in Munger Graduate Dorm.  Availability is extremely limited and is offered first to returning participants.  Please let us know immediately if you are interested in exploring this option.

We encourage you to explore other housing options near campus as room availability is extremely limited by Stanford University Conference Services.

Full housing fees must be paid by check and are due May 1, 2019.

Housing Check-in: earliest Friday evening, June 21, 2019 at 5:00 pm.

  • If there is no one at the desk, call 650-723-3225

  • After 8:00 pm: Call 650-723-3225. Calls will be forwarded to the after hours HART office who will send a response team member over.

Housing Check-out: Sunday morning, June 30th, 2019 at 10:00 am.

  • Apartment-style graduate student housing for one person: $1472.40.

  • As noted on the GetAcceptd information page, 2019 tuition is $1,200 per participant. Non-refundable tuition payments totaling 25% of your tuition are due by March 10, 2019. The remaining tuition fees are due May 1, 2019.

  • If a participant is unable to attend and if notice is given no later than June 1, 2019, a refund of 75% tuition may be requested and will be considered on a case by case basis.

Tuition

WHAT TO BRING

Undergrad housing provides:

  • Towels

  • Bedding (linen service Wednesday morning)

  • Toilet paper

  • Microwave, sink

  • Daily student breakfast at Braun Music Center

Munger  Graduate Dorm provides:

  • Towels

  • Bedding (linen service Wednesday morning)

  • Toilet paper

  • Soap, shampoo, conditioner

  • Kitchen with refrigerator, microwave, stove top, and oven but no dishes, cookware, flatware, or  small appliances are provided. If you want to cook on your own, consider mailing a "camping box" of basic supplies ahead of time.

  • Mail packages to: YOUR NAME c/o  SLSQ, Braun Music Center, 541 Lasuen Mall, Stanford, CA 94305-3076

All participants should bring:

  • Comfortable shoes for walking. All events are on or near campus within one mile.

  • Music stand

  • Instrument and bow in good working condition and all necessary supplies (replacement strings/rosin/mute etc)

  • Shower flip-flops if you are in the undergrad housing (shared bathrooms)

  • Light jacket for evenings

  • Personal toiletries

  • Cash: Parking scratchers are $5 per day (TBC) ; rehearsal room key deposit is $20 (one member per ensemble).

  • Attire for Finale concert: Performers are expected to be in "casual formal" concert dress. No tuxedos or ball gowns, no flip flops. If you wear a skirt, it should be below knee length.

  • Other than the Finale concert, all events are casual.

During the seminar, food services are available at a variety of on-campus locations, or at restaurants in nearby Palo Alto. Throughout the Seminar, there will be several group meals provided, but attendees are responsible for most of their own meals. Please plan accordingly.

Scholarship dining cards may be used at any several on-campus cafés (more info to come). All funds remaining on the card after June 30th expire. They cannot be saved or transferred. Please plan to use (and drain!) them.



FOOD

SERVICES

Pre-formed ensembles receiving tuition scholarship support also qualify for partial travel assistance. Travel assistance will be in the form of reimbursement following proof of airfare purchase.

All reimbursements will be processed via electronic "portals." Each person receiving a reimbursement will receive an individual link to be used to upload the required documentation. Requirements may vary per person depending on your country of residence and may include driver’s license, passport, or other identification, I-9, Visa, Social Security number, or Tax I.D.#.

Note the following:

  • Do not use air miles to arrange your airfare. We can only reimburse an actual purchase.

  • Your itinerary must show your travel date and time to a Bay Area airport and proof of purchase (example: $200 Mastercard #XXXX)

  • Once you have purchased your airfare, save your itinerary as a pdf with your full name in the document title.

  • Cellists: Save all the same info for your cello's ticket. Cello should be booked as "CBBG <Your Last Name>" or "Cello <Your Last Name>".

  • Send everything to slsqseminar@gmail.com

  • It is easier if you have one ticket that is round trip, but it is possible to process the travel assistance funds for one way flights.

  • If you are traveling internationally, please save your  boarding passes . You will be asked to present the physical paper passes when you arrive and/or upload to a pdf / screenshot of the electronic boarding pass.

Individual applicants and local participants do not receive travel assistance.
